The King of the Sea held his head in his hands as he continued to listen to the wailing cries of the young princess. Nothing he did could console them. No food, no music, no words. Even his singing did not a thing to help--it made Rosie feel worse in fact. They only wanted one person to sing to them, and that person had left them by themselves. A hole was forming in the child's heart, a hole that no one should ever have to experience. The loss of their mother. Another strangled cry ripped itself from Rosie's throat as they clutched their purse, sobbing loudly to the sky, sobbing for someone to take them away and back to their Mum and Nana.

Rosie lay on a blanket in the warm sand, facing the vast and green ocean. They didn't know why, but their Mama had dropped them off here and then left them alone...With him. The so-called 'King of the Sea.' Rose suspected it had something to do with their mother's desire for power, as most strange occurrences around Holly Wood had to do with. But Rose didn't care. They didn't care why Mum left, all they cared about was getting her back. Why did she leave them? What could losing her baby ever accomplish? Was Rosie that bad of a ducky that no one wanted them anymore?

This brought on another wave of fresh tears, and as Rosie weeped their heart out, the King's heart sunk in sadness as well. He wondered if the child was afraid, and that was why they were so horribly perturbed. But this crying was not out of fear as much as...heartbreak. The child's heart had been broken. And now it was up to him, and only him, to fix it. He supposed it was a part of the deal, after all. He was a kind old man and would not allow the 'duck' to be sad for too long.

With an anguished sniffle, the young Morrison opened up the green, flower-covered purse their Nana had made for them and took outall the small, treasured items they kept inside of it. They raised each item to their lips and gave it a kiss, setting the items out in a line in the sand in front of their bare toes. The purse smelled like sweets and Nana and Mummy, like safety and happiness. The sun was beginning to set, the seagulls crying loudly in the distance. It would be dark soon...And Rose would be alone. Glancing behind them, to where the King of the Sea lived, their stomach turned in anxiousness and absolute dread. Outside in the dark where a Spider could kidnap them? Or inside with the curly haired blonde man who was so tall and so ornery?

After wailing and pounding the sand with their fists for another few minutes, Rose had absolutely tired themselves out. The ache did not cease, however. It was deep rooted and heavy in their chest, like a set of claws ripping at their heart. Too exhausted to cry anymore, Rosie cuddled the purse, inhaling the scent of home and moaning in pain. The ache was becoming physical. "Mummy please no," they whimpered, their voice whispery and their throat raw from screaming. The sun finally went down and the child did not notice. Their world was full of nothing but darkness anyway, being separated from their dear family.

Rose scrunched up their face and let out a desperate, child-like cry for their family before collapsing into the sand. They tried to cry more--crying was like a relief--yet they were far too drained emotionally and physically to move a single muscle. A couple more agonizing minutes ticked by. Rosie did not cry. With the last bit of energy they had, the princess pulled out the most cherished thing in their world--a small bell from Nana. She and Rosie's mother Dawn also had a bell, but Rosie was unsure how often they were rung and if Nana and Mum even carried the bell around all the time like the grandbaby did.

'Ring the bell and we will hear. Time cannot distance us. Distance cannot separate us. We are together forever.'

Ring ring, the small bell said, yet nothing happened. No one came. Rosie was alone as before. They curled the bell into their fist as they fought to stay awake, though they did not know what purpose continuing to go on without their family would serve. Darkness fell and covered the shores of Holly Wood, wrapping Rose up in a blanket of a dreamless, deep sleep. Their heart, as well as their faith, broken.

The King of the Sea approached the sleeping form laying in the sand, crumpled up in pain, curled in the fetal position. He leaned down and scooped Rosie up, his arms underneath their knees and supporting their head. He made a few grumpy nosies in complaint, as he was not the young man he used to be. He was still handsome and charming, of course--but much of his strength had diminished. Fortunately, the princess was not too heavy and he was able to carry them back inside to his home.

Meanwhile, the bell was still grasped firmly in Rose's hand. With each step the old king took, the bell rang out into the night.
They cried in their sleep, begging for their Mum and Nana. Alas, no one heard save for the King. The bell rang and never before had Rosie felt so shattered and so utterly, absolutely alone.
